“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”-Mahatma Gandhi.
History has witnessed several outstanding achievements by men and women. However, the achievement is even more appreciated if attained with an apparent physical disability. It takes immense courage and passion for an ordinary, differently- abled girl to achieve success and make her dreams come true. Most of us take our able bodied existence for granted. Despite being physically fit, we complain and make excuses and here she is a differently-abled girl, who proves that you don’t need two hands, legs or eyes to succeed, all you need is will-power and determination.
She was born in December 1986, belonging to a rural poverty stricken family. Her father, Late. Jirmia Aind was a farmer by profession and her mother, Bobita Aind is a homemaker.
When she was 2 years-old, Shantilata Aind suffered a serious illness. The deterioration of her health condition left her paralyzed from one side. After a few treatments by the doctor, her right side of the body started working, however the right leg became completely dysfunctional. She and her family were devastated.
Shantilata did not give up her journey. She completed her graduation struggling against all odds. There was constant support and encouragement from her parents. It was yet another remarkable incident, which transformed her life from a rural girl to an independent working woman, when she left her village and travelled to the Hatigaon vocational training centre of Orion Edutech. It was only possible with the help of Orion Edutech, which is successfully running the DDU- GKY project with the aim to bridge the gap between poverty and prosperity. Under this project she successfully completed her training with the guidance and motivation from her trainers. Her life was greatly influenced by her Soft Skill and English trainer, Ms. Romi Lara, who revolutionized her mind frame from impossible to “anything is possible”. Her zeal, aspiration and desire to get a job made her qualify the interview for the reputed BPO MNC Company, Concentrix. She has joined this organization at Kolkata branch and is now the sole bread earner of her family with her monthly income of ten thousand and above.
Her journey from being a helpless kid to a successful independent lady is awe-inspiring. We have only one word for her – Respect!
