Today, we read from many sources, the digital formats have taken over printed books. Have you ever lost yourself in reading, may be a good book? It is a skill in itself. Reading helps us find something meaningful and build our knowledge. It will help us to become more creative. Contrary to the popular notion, reading is not passive. It’s a highly active skill that requires many cognitive processes.

It is one of the most valued skills as it helps in improving other skills like speaking and writing. It will help you grow in your career as well. In today’s busy world, getting into the habit of reading is not easy. However, like any habit, the habit of reading books can be picked up with just a little bit of effort.

To help you build the habit of reading , we have put together some points. You can practice them consciously to build your reading skills.

Avoid distraction

You need some quiet time to focus more on reading. Daily, you can take out some time from your busy schedules and sit at a quiet place to read something. Turn off other sources like TV, laptop and phone. Stay away from distractions to concentrate better. Sit in nature and enjoy your reading time.

Reading skillsRead everyday

Make it a point to read at least 10 pages every single night before you go to bed. It will help you to be consistent in reading. Reading helps in calming one’s mind also. Make sure to learn something new through reading. Read out loud if possible. It will help you to get a better grasp of the content.

Write down your points

While reading something, make your own notes whenever possible. This keeps you focused and engaged. You can note down your thoughts, questions and any new words that you have learned. Try writing down a paragraph summary, it will also help you improve your writing skills.

Try to recall major points

Try to speak or write about your findings once you are done with your reading. Try to recall major plot twists and points from the book. This way you will be able to know whether you have concentrated on your reading or not. If you can’t remember, then read it again and increase your focus.
