UGC approves dual degree program

by Sahitya Karra

in Academia, News

Integrated degree programs, like a degree with post-graduation, are popular among the students. Many colleges and institutions are currently having courses like B.Tech. with M.Tech. and B.A. with M.A. integrated courses. But students could not pursue a dual degree in multiple disciplines like an Engineering degree with Literature.

Good news to every student who wants to pursue two degrees at the same time. An engineering student can now pursue a degree in economics simultaneously. And a student of Economics can now pursue Literature at the same time. These dual degrees can get the student an additional advantage, help them find their dream job, and eventually better career opportunities.

University Grants Commission (UGC) has now approved a proposal to allow students to pursue two degree programs at the same time. One of the degrees has to be in the regular mode and the other either in open and distance learning or online mode.

UGC has taken this decision to improve the career prospects of the students, which will help in improving their skill-sets and employability. As the nature of work around the world is changing, the job markets are demanding multidisciplinary skills from its employees. Though technical skills play a significant role, they are not enough.

While specialisations remain as important as ever, the ability to think critically and laterally is now equally crucial to a successful career. In this context, the skills that a multidisciplinary education can impart assume even greater importance.

The policy of dual degrees can also give an impetus to online education in India. UGC has already taken several steps in this direction, like recently allowing the top 100 Indian universities, as rated by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, to offer their degrees fully online under the automatic route.

The decision of allowing the students to pursue dual is one of the landmark decisions made in the domain of education and skill development. We the team NSN welcome this and hope that many students take up this opportunity to be trained and skilled in multiple disciplines and be ready and employable for the jobs in the future.
